Wisdomap Law in the press

We are delighted to feature in this term's Verdict - Oxford University Law Society's magazine. We were interviewed about Wisdomap Law, our study aid for law students. Below is an extract from the article, just without the pictures!

TECHNOLOGY'S HELPING HAND

This term, we are pleased to announce a partnership with Wisdomap Law, an Oxford start-up that is revolutionising how law students use technology to help them learn. We caught up with one of the founders, Frederic Kalinke, to tell us more.

Can you tell us a little bit about your background?

I graduated from Oxford last year and have always been fascinated by learning. Both my parents are teachers so debates about how to learn effectively dominated mealtime discussions. I also found it really interesting seeing the different ways people studied in Oxford's libraries - I'd see students commandeering desks for weeks during exam period, plastering every visible surface with post-it notes, creating beautiful revision notes, complex spider diagrams and frantically hiding and revealing facts, quotes or equations for memory. I've also always had a passion for technology and realised that although students spend hours on computers, researching, essaying or procrastinating, they are not making the full use of technology to help them learn. So I partnered with a developer I met at Oxford Entrepreneurs and began developing a platform to help law students learn. Since then we've scooped an award, had interest from technology companies and piloted our product with one of the world's largest educational publishers.

What exactly is Wisdomap Law?

Wisdomap Law is a platform that helps law students learn. It breaks legal information down into small digestable parts; splits legal cases into memorable flashcards; creates beautiful structured revision notes and provides in-built memory recall functions. Another great feature is the ability for law students to access their information anywhere through a mobile application. For instance, you can access and memorise that case ratio on the Oxford Tube without lugging all your files and folders with you. You can also get a friend to test you on legal cases on your mobile phone!

In short, it combines all the learning styles and techniques I'd witnessed in Oxford's libraries - flashcards for memory, mindmaps for organisation, beautiful structured revision notes, memory recall exercises - all in one single solution. Over the next few years, we are going to see technology continue to permeate all aspects of our lives and learning is definitely next in line for transformation.

Why did you develop Wisdomap for law students?

We decided to focus on law for a number of reasons. We identified three unique challenges in the study of law that we could address. Firstly, law is vocational and information-centric. To be a good lawyer, you need to pass a law degree but you also need to have a thorough understanding of legal information. Secondly, legal study involves volume and memory- law students have to memorise hundreds of legal cases and concepts. Thirdly, legal info is 'structural' in that concepts and legal cases follow a structure - the Court, Held, Facts, Principle etc.. Wisdomap Law addresses these challenges by providing a platform that packages legal information into formats that are easy to access and learn.

The Perfect Study Notes

We're constantly tweaking our products to make them better and better. We are busy building the ultimate law study aid and medical study aid and visual teaching and learning tool.

Today we're happy to launch a revamped version of our revision notes feature. Having consulted teachers and students across the internet over what makes the best set of study notes, we're very pleased with the final product. They are clean, uncluttered, structured and colourful. We're looking forward to seeing law students, medical students, teachers and whole classrooms benefit from them in their learning and teaching.

Currently. you can download your maps into study notes by clicking the download button in the toolbar. We're also going to be expanding this functionality to our flashcards so that law students can download their legal cases and medical students can download differential diagnoses into beautiful study notes.

Flashy flashcards for Law

You may have been wondering where we have been since our last blog post. The answer is: working our Wisdomap socks off.

Today, we're delighted to announce a new feature: flashcards for our Law application. Law students can now create flashcards for legal cases. The whole flashcard feature has learning and memory at its core: law students can break legal cases down into subsections (the Case Title, Date, Court, Facts, Held, Principle); distil the most important parts of a legal case; highlight key important words, phrases or facts; and test memory anytime, anywhere on computers, mobiles, or through automatically generated study notes.

We'll be fully launching in the next month so keep your eyes peeled on the blog. We hope you're as excited about these changes and the launch as we are. There's plenty more to come and we promise we won't keep you waiting this time!

Some big and small (but important!) updates

We are delighted to announce a few updates to Wisdomap.

Firstly, the Beta versions of our Medical and Law applications are up and running. We've had fantastic feedback from both law and medical students who use it to organise and memorise their medical and legal information. Also look out soon for a mobile version that will enable students to take their knowledge with them on the go! Once we launch, we will use this blog to showcase some of the cool features in both applications.

We've also listened to user feedback and made some changes to the right-hand-column, adding colours and numbered bullets to the text-editing options.

As ever, any questions or feature requests, please get in touch. We've been hiding for quite a while, working on developing our product and have quite a few surprises up our sleeves. Keep your eyes peeled!

To move, recolour or resize individual nodes, highlight the node and click the 'settings' button in toolbar. Any changes you make will automatically take effect. If you have any feedback on this feature or ideas for future ones, please drop us an email.

Happy node tweaking!

Teachers Ahoy!

We are pleased to announce the launch of the new-look Teacher Account and our range of Site Licences.

We have listened to user feedback and have improved all of our educational features.

Assignment mode has a new interface that allows teachers to set mind-map assignments and easily manage submissions. Students can also now save their mind-map assignments before submitting them.

Both teachers and students can also tag themselves with their class name or department which is great for classifying maps in the School/College/University branded library.

Keep your eye on the blog for new and exciting features that are coming soon.

Step by step

We like to think Wisdomap is pretty easy to use but today we've made it even easier by launching a step-by-step tutorial that walks first time users through the process of building a map.

It shows clearly in real-time how you add and rename nodes, add media files and notes and where to find some of our other cool features.

We've lots of exciting things planned for the next few months so stay tuned!
